12th Oct 2014
Gracepoint, Grantchester, Catching Milat and Our Girl debut at MIPCOM
New Tape Deals Announced for Gracepoint & Grantchester.
CANNES MIPCOM: 12th October 2014: Shine International, the sales and distribution arm of Shine Group, has today announced it is bringing 112 hours of new and returning drama to MIPCOM.
Gracepoint, Grantchester, Catching Milat and Our Girl all make their market debut as Shine International confirms new tape deals for Gracepoint (Spain – Telefónica) and for Grantchester (Sweden - SVT).
Recently announced, worldwide distribution deals have seen Gracepoint (FOX) acquired by Foxtel (Australia) and Global TV (Canada). Based on Broadchurch, the U.K.’s critically acclaimed hit crime drama, Gracepoint, a new 10-episode event series expands on the original series threading new storylines through the gripping narrative. Featuring an all-star cast led by David Tennant (Broadchurch, Dr. Who), Emmy Award winner Anna Gunn (Breaking Bad), Emmy Award nominee and Golden Globe Award winner Nick Nolte (Luck) and Oscar® nominee Jacki Weaver (Silver Linings Playbook), the powerful crime series moves to its startling conclusion series as the investigation cuts a devastating swathe through the small Californian town of Gracepoint. The series is a Shine America production in association with Kudos and Imaginary Friends.
From Lovely Day, set against the backdrop of the real village of Grantchester, the new captivating six-part drama focuses on the life of Sidney Chambers, a charismatic, charming clergyman who turns investigative vicar when one of his parishioners dies in suspicious circumstances. Adapted from the novel, ‘Sidney Chambers and the Shadow of Death’ by James Runcie, the son of ex-Archbishop of Canterbury, Robert Runcie, the series is written for ITV by Daisy Coulam (EastEnders, Casualty) and stars James Norton (Happy Valley, Death Comes To Pemberly) and Robson Green (Wire In The Blood).
Also debuting at MIPCOM is Shine Australia’s drama, Catching Milat. The two-part psychological thriller is a dramatised version of the story of the investigation into the 1990s New South Wales’ backpacker murders leading to the arrest and conviction of serial killer Ivan Milat against a backdrop of intense media pressure and public fear. Directed by Peter Andrikidis, the procedural drama is based on the book “Sins of the Brother” by Mark Whittaker and Les Kennedy and stars Ivan Milat (Killing Time) in the title role.
Following last year’s successful, RTS Award-nominated single drama, Our Girl, starring Lacey Turner as the unstoppable Molly Dawes, is also coming to make its MIPCOM debut. Written by Tony Grounds and made by BBC Drama Production, the new series follows Molly on her first deployment as a serving army medic against the backdrop of the British Army’s withdrawal from Afghanistan.
Nadine Nohr, CEO Shine International, said: “We are on a continued growth trajectory with our drama and are excited to be bringing such a wonderfully diverse slate to market. From a mini-series based on the real life horror of the notorious backpacker murders, through to sumptuous, period drama Grantchester, these titles have incredible scale and range. But most importantly, they all share one common theme: rich, compelling storytelling at their hearts and we look forward to seeing audiences around the globe connect with them in the same way we have.”
