Shine International closes major format deal for Clash Of The Choirs in China

Sale caps flurry of activity in Asia Pacific with nine Shine International formats
currently in production

LOS ANGELES - September 21st, 2011 – Shine International, the international sales and distribution arm of Shine Group, today announced it has signed a major format deal, selling Clash of the Choirs, the heart-warming, talent entertainment format, to CCTV1, China’s leading broadcaster.

CCTV1 has ordered 10 episodes of Clash of the Choirs, which follows the path of celebrities who go back to their home town to recruit, form and coach an amateur choir to compete with rival choirs and have the time of their lives!

The series is scheduled to premiere in early November and marks Shine International’s second format deal in China following the recent sale of creative hair styling competition Shear Genius to Shanghai Media Group (SMG).

“China is a key market for Shine International, so I’m thrilled to announce our second format deal in the country as we continue to build a footprint and grow partnerships and format distribution in the Asia Pacific region with local productions of our major global franchises,” said Cyrus Farrokh, Director of International Distribution overseeing Asia Pacific at Shine International. I’ve no doubt Clash of the Choirs will capture the hearts prime time audiences in China as it has globally.”

The format has now been sold in 14 countries, most recently in Poland where it exceeded TVP2’s slot average by 40%.

The latest deal brings the total number of Shine international formats in production across Asia Pacific to 9. These productions include culinary competition series MasterChef in India, Indonesia and Malaysia; Junior MasterChef in The Philippines; a Pan-Asian production of global lifestyle format The Biggest Loser; The Biggest Loser in The Philippines; and leading global game show format The Moment of Truth in Taiwan.

MasterChef Indonesia consistently ranked No.1 in its time period for broadcaster RCTI. Junior MasterChef premiered in The Philippines August 20 on ABS-CBN to an audience of 4.3 million viewers. The Biggest Loser in The Philippines, recently renewed for a second season, follows the success of The Biggest Loser Pan Asia, which has wrapped two seasons. In Taiwan, Next TV has aired more than 120 episodes of The Moment of Truth.

In the US, over eight million viewers tuned into the premiere of Clash of the Choirs in 2007, with the show ranking No.1 in its time period across all key targets. Elsewhere in Sweden, where there are five seasons of the show, the series has doubled the average market share of broadcaster TV4 across all key demographics. A hit with audiences in Finland and Denmark, three seasons have now successfully aired in both territories, and in Switzerland, the premiere season in 2010 was nominated for the prestigious TV Programme of the Year Award.
