Restaurant Startup, makes its MIPCOM debut as format secures its second series and tape sales in two territories

MasterChef US and Italia Judge Bastianich to contribute to MasterChef Masterclass Panel at market

CANNES MIPCOM: Tuesday 14 October 2014: Shine International today announce that Joe Bastianich will make his MIPCOM debut this October with successful format: Restaurant Startup.

The primetime factual entertainment format premiered in June 2014 on CNBC and has recently secured a 10x60’ second series, to air in January 2015. Following the success of the pilot series, tape sale deals for season 1 have been secured in two territories, Canada (Game TV) and the Philippines (LifeStyle Network).

Since premiering, Restaurant Startup improved its time period average by +100% among P18-49, +41% in total viewers and +30% in P25-54. It has also become CNBC’s most watched original series premier in the network’s history.

Restaurant Startup follows restaurateur, author and TV personality, Joe Bastianich (judge on the US adaptation of MasterChef, MasterChef Junior USA and MasterChef Italy), and chef and restaurant operator, Tim Love, as they vie to invest their own money in restaurant concepts they believe could make them millions.

Joe Bastianich will also take part in a MasterChef masterclass panel at MIPCOM to explore the format’s international roll out, approach and appeal over the last decade. The showcase will take place in the Esterel Auditorium, Palais des Festivals at 14:30, Wednesday, 15th October with insights on production, judging and distribution.

Produced by Shine America for CNBC, the hit American reality format sees two teams make their case to the investors, Joe Bastianich and Tim Love, for a shot at launching a temporary version of their concept for a restaurant or a specialty food shop. The model will then be tested on the public and at the end of the process, the two investors will decide whether or not they will put their own money on the line to make someone’s dreams a reality.

Joe Bastianich said: “I had been searching for a format that would accurately convey the reality of what it takes to successfully open and operate a restaurant. By collaborating with Eden Gaha of Shine America, I was fortunate enough to see that vision come to light with Restaurant Startup. One of the most educationally substantial and genuine unscripted programs on the market, the show will resonate with viewers on a global level.”

Nadine Nohr, CEO, Shine International, said: “Restaurant Startup is a smart and exciting new format with the investors having as much to lose as the potential restaurateurs. Food is an international genre and the show gives viewers a true portrayal of how the restaurant industry works. We’re excited to bring the series to market for the first time, which is already generating interest as this new show is as real as factual entertainment TV gets.”

Restaurant Startup is produced for CNBC by Shine America and JB Crushed, LLC, with James Bruce, Eden Gaha, Paul Franklin, Robin Feinberg and Joe Bastianich as executive producers. Jim Ackerman and Lucas Platt are the executive producers for CNBC.
