New deals in Colombia and Chile take MasterChef territory deals past the 50 global productions milestone
LONDON: Friday 10th October 2014: Shine Group today announces a new format deal with RCN Television to produce MasterChef in Colombia and that the total number of adaptations of the format has now surpassed 50 globally.
Colombia marks the fourth deal to be done in Latin America in the past eight months for MasterChef and will be one of the first primetime cooking shows to air in the territory. It follows closely on deals for MasterChef Chile (Channel 13), the recently debuted MasterChef Brazil (Bandeirantes) and MasterChef Argentina, a smash hit for Telefe when it aired earlier this year peaking with a 47% share. In total, there are now 52 adaptations globally of the format.
Nadine Nohr, CEO, Shine International, said: “We are delighted that MasterChef has surpassed the 50 adaptation milestone. The scalable and adaptable nature of the format has obviously been a big part its success, however it’s the essence of the show that is truly distinctive: the story of ordinary lives being changed through the realisation of a dream via a unique combination of challenges and values. Within that context it’s a format that you can really make your own, on any channel in any market and the recent growth in Latin America helps to demonstrate the programme’s cross-cultural appeal.”
Presently airing in over 200 territories worldwide via tape sales, the format has also given rise to a number of successful iterations including MasterChef Junior and Celebrity MasterChef. MasterChef Junior has already reached 18 territories and was the highest rated new unscripted series across all US networks when the show opened for FOX in the 2013-14 season, receiving a commission for a third series before production on season two began. In Spain, the final of MasterChef Junior’s debut series was watched by 4.4 million viewers, earning a 22% market share.
A MasterChef showcase has also been announced to take place at MIPCOM exploring the format’s international roll out, approach and appeal over the last decade. Joe Bastianich, the acclaimed restaurateur and judge from the hit US and Italian adaptations of MasterChef will join Mark Fennessy, CEO, Shine Australia and Thierry Lackhar, CEO, Shine France and Nadine Nohr, CEO, Shine International on a specially convened panel, as part of MIPCOM’s Masterclass series at the market.
Ratings have also continued to rise for MasterChef in returning series internationally. Produced by Shine Soho, the tenth series of amateur MasterChef delivered its highest market share to date for the BBC earlier this year, and was the thirtieth series of all iterations in the original territory for the format, the UK. The debut series of MasterChef Spain was broadcaster TVE-1′s (La 1) number one rated show of the year with a market share of 33.1% and MasterChef Australia’s latest sixth season was up 24% year on year for Channel Ten. A fifth season of MasterChef was recently announced by TF1 to be broadcast in France in 2015.
Off-air, MasterChef continues to flourish with new experiences launched this year. A recent 130 cover, ‘pop up’ restaurant on the 15th floor of the Blue Fin Building overlooking London’s skyline concluded an extended five-week run last week, having sold out its tickets in just four days. The MasterChef Travel programme, a range of culinary holidays curated and accompanied by MasterChef finalists, launched earlier this year to a variety of international destinations including China, India, Italy and the Caribbean. In total, MasterChef has licensed consumer product ranges and publishing deals now in 26 countries through ancillary division Shine 360.
MasterChef is represented internationally by Shine International, the sales and distribution arm of the Shine Group. The show was originally revived as MasterChef Goes Large in 2005 by Shine TV in the UK and is based on a format originally created by Franc Roddam.
The MasterChef showcase will take place in the Esterel Auditorium, Palais des Festivals at 14:30, Wednesday, 15th October with insights on production, judging and distribution.
