The Burrowers

  • Original producer: Dragonfly Film and Television
  • Original broadcaster: BBC2

The Burrowers is a ground breaking, fixed rig documentary format where cameras go underground into the secretive, little seen world of some of Britain’s best-loved burrowing animals – rabbits, badgers, moles and water voles in a bid to understand them better and offer a brand new perspective on the world in which we live.

Very little has actually ever been observed inside these underground habitats, but now we have captured all the drama and emotion inherent in the lives of the animals. Working closely with leading scientists, conservationists, vets and some of the world’s top wildlife film-makers, the production team have painstakingly designed and built full-scale replicas of the animals underground homes, rigging the environments with cameras for the purpose of this ground-breaking three-part series.

For the animals, it’s business as usual, and unaware of the cameras recording every their move, the resulting footage reveals an incredible insight into these rarely studied subterranean worlds. Viewers will learn how these creatures create their homes, breed and give birth, revealing, for the first time on film, how incredibly sophisticated they are.
