Jake and Emma are struggling to overcome their addictions to love, sex, drugs and alcohol at the Promis rehab centre. Drawn to each other through their shared fondness for self-imposed oblivion, they find that despite their obvious rapport and heady sexual chemistry, neither can really get better while they take solace in each other. When the Promis staff ban the two from seeing each other, Jake leaves the program, beginning a downward spiral which will see him attempting to stave off the demons alone. Comfortably Numb s rare approach, using real rehab staff and patients and a documentary style, allows us access to a world which is usually only encountered in lurid, red-top headlines. Time Out said of director Leo Regan that he doesn t just film people, but enters into a dialogue that questions himself as much as them. It s not an easy way to make documentaries, but it s a surefire way to capture the essence of what it is to be human.
